This year at Newberry High School, the recycling program was coordinated by Amy Sarver and Huger Caughman. The Special Education students took the lead in collecting the school’s paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass wares, and cans each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Newberry County provides a bin for paper at the school as well as recycling bins for each classroom where students and teachers can place their recyclables.

Newberry High School was awarded a 2017-18 Recycling Education Grant through DHEC. This grant was used to purchase equipment and supplies needed to build upon the program. A total of eight large recycling cans were purchased to be placed, two, in each teacher work room for the collection of bottles and cans. The grant was also used to purchase a large utility cart for the students to pick up the recycling bins with paper and cardboard through the school.

As our recycling program continues to grow, our students and faculty are able to be more environmentally friendly and earth conscious. By serving as recycling leaders, our special education students continue to gain valuable work experience as well as participate and raise awareness in making our school a more environmentally responsible community.
